Game #114 at San Francisco

AT&T Park | 3:05 | Gorzelanny vs. Barry Zito | Box
Tom Gorzelanny was stellar. He threw his first career complete game shutout. He allowed five hits and one walk while striking out four. He retired the final 16 Giants he faced.
Josh Phelps put the game away for the offense. He belted a two run homer in the sixth and added a two run triple in the 7th for the final tallies. It was the first four-RBI game for Phelps since 4/9/05 and his first triple since 7/8/04.
Can the Pirates schedule the Giants 162 times a year?

Pre-game Thoughts
Huge contract holder Barry Zito goes for the first time in his career against the Pirates. Despite an ERA of 5.00, Zito is a somewhat respectable 8-10. He threw an inning of relief earlier this month in between starts for his first career relief appearance in the Show. The only Pirate position player to face Zito is Josh Phelps. He is 2-11 with a tater.
Gorzelanny got back on the wagon after some injury trouble. His last start produced a W. He went 7 innings and gave up four hits and two runs against Washington. His only career appearance against San Fran was July 29, 2006. He got the win – his first ML victory – when he gave up two runs in seven innings pitched. He has never pitched in San Francisco.
Bust out the brooms. Can the Bucs get a sweep on the road?

  1. Steven Hanson Says:

Sanchez and Doumit are on fire right now. I’m a little surprised you’re not talking about those guys.
How’s Paulino doing defensively these days?

  2. Randy Linville Says:

I mentioned Freddy prominently in yesterday’s recap. Good point about Doumit. I didn’t realize that he has more hits and more walks in August than he had in all of July. He hit less than .200 for July and his BA dipped by 30 points. Its back up 10 points after his torrid first 1/3 of August.
I’m not going to claim to know the best way to measure a catcher’s defense. The Bucs are third to last in the NL in stolen bases allowed, but have the sixth best caught stealing percentage. Paulino had that awful game a couple of weeks ago. Anyone else have some thoughts on Paulino’s defense?
We got a tight one by the Bay. The Bucs are leading 1-0 after four. Zito has allowed just two hits. Thankfully they were in the same inning and one was for extra bases. Cesar Izturis singled home Jose Castillo who got on with a double.
Josh Phelps is at 1B. Castillo is playing third. Jose Bautista is in CF.
