Game #138 at St. Louis

Busch Stadium | 8:10 | Morris vs. Joel Piniero | Box
Matt Morris didn’t do much against his old team. The Bucs outhit the Cards, but lost where it matters most. Chris Duncan’s bases clearing double broke open a 2-2 game and Russell Branyan homered for the final tally.
Joel Piniero was the winner. Jose Bautista had two doubles for the losing Buccos.

Pre-game Thoughts
Matt Morris goes up against his first club. A night after Kip Wells was bombed by his first franchise, here’s hopping that Mo’ fares better. Morris is 0-2 in three starts with a 4.82 ERA against St. Louis. All of those appearances came while he was with the Giants. His only 2007 start against the Redbirds was a no decision back on 4/18. That 2007 start was his only appearance in new Busch Stadium.
He hasn’t really fooled many of the Cardinals. Other than Chris Duncan (1-7), Gary Bennett (0-5) and Jim Edmonds (0-5), St. Louis is doing quite well against him.
Albert Pujols is 6-9 with two homers. David Eckstein is 4-12. Even Russell Branyan is 6-16.
Joel Piniero has been an important piece for St. Louis since being acquired from the Red Sox. After pitching in relief in Boston, Tony LaRussa put the Puerto Rico native into the rotation. In six starts with St. Louis he is 3-2 with a 3.71 ERA. That includes a 1-0 record in two starts with a sub 3.00 ERA in St. Louis.
Not much experience on the Pirates against Piniero. Jason Bay (2-3), Xavier Nady (2-7) and Josh Phelps (2-9) have all homered off him. Jack Wilson is 0-3. No other Pirate has faced him.
Monday Night Thoughts
Thought Roger Federer was in for a long night after dropping the first set. After he went up 3-0 in the third, I called it a night. He’s unreal.
