Busch Stadium | 8:10 | Armas vs. Mark Mulder | Box
Tony Armas with another win. Whoda thunk it? Not me. Mark Mulder didn’t pitch well. Jack Wilson drove in three with a run clearing double. Ronny Paulino provided more muscle with a three run homer. Steve Pearce had two hits and scored twice.
Armas gave up just five hits and two runs in six innings. The bullpen threw three hitless innings to close it out.
AP recap at Yahoo! Sports
I don’t want to talk about Tony Armas. So, I’m going to talk only about Mark Mulder who hasn’t pitched in over a year after undergoing arm surgery. If he can pitch well down the stretch, providing the Cards a boost the way Joel Piniero has, then St. Louis might have enough to sneak past the Cubs and Brewers in the NL Central.
Mulder has been sparkling against the Pirates in his career. He is unbeaten (6-0) in eight starts with a 2.68 ERA. In the current form of Busch Stadium, he is 4-2 with a 4.03 ERA. In small doses Cesar Izturis (4-7), Xavier Nady (3-5) and Jose Bautista (3-3 with a dinger) have hit well against Mulder. The guys that have seen him more often have struggled. Jason Bay is 2-20 with seven whiffs. Jack Wilson is 3-17. Freddy Sanchez and Jose Castillo are both 3-12. Castillo has homered.
Tuesday Night Thoughts
So long to Rafael Nadal. I intended to stay up and watch the match. But I fell asleep in the third set. Too bad. I was hoping for another Fed/Rafa final.
