Again, from the mothership:
[General manager Neal] Huntington introduced Greg Smith as the Pirates’ new scouting director, Kyle Stark as the team’s next director of player development and Bryan Minniti as the director of baseball operation. …
Smith most recently served as a scout in the Tigers’ organization. He’s the new (and hopefully improved) Ed Creech. Smith was Detroit’s scouting director between 1997 and 2004, but is listed on the Tigers’ website now as a “major league scout.” That smells something like Huntington’s step backwards from assistant general manager to assistant to the general manager in Cleveland.
Stark, 29, follows Huntington from Cleveland, where he served in 2006 and 2007 as assistant farm director. He’s the new Brian Graham, and earned the praise of Mark Shapiro:
“[Stark] impacted the organization in so many ways,” Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro said. “I think his strengths lie in his work ethic, his passion for the game and his knowledge of the game. I think evaluation-wise, he has a very unique perspective. He’s definitely had the opportunity to have his hand in many different areas.”
Finally, the last front office member named today earned a promotion from within the Pirates’ organization:
Minniti, 27, has been a member of the Pirates’ baseball operations department for seven seasons and has most recently been in charge of handling the Major League rules and regulations as well as waivers and transactions for the Pirates.
