The Pirates announced the hiring of three coaches today. Gary Varsho will be the new bench coach, Tony Beasley will man the third base coaching box and Luis Dorante will be the team’s bullpen coach.
Varsho had a 383-319 record manging in the Seattle and Philadelphia organizations from 1997-2001. He was the Phillies’ bench coach from 2002-2006 before joining the Cleveland organization as minor league outfield/baserunning coordinator last season. Beasley compiled a 374-258 record while managing in the Pirates organization from 2001-2005. He coached third for the Nationals in 2006 before returning to the Pirates as their roving minor legue infield instructor last season. Dorante had a 479-489 record managing off and on in the Montreal and Florida organizations between 1999 and 2007. He served as the Marlins’ bullpen coach in 2005.
The remainder of the coaching staff is expected to be named tomorrow.
UPDATE (11/21/2007 5:00 PM): As expected, the Pirates announced today that Jeff Andrews will be the team’s new pitching coach. Andrews has performed in that same role with Altoona and Indianapolis the past five seasons. The remainder of the coaching staff is expected to be named after the holiday.
