Pirates News and Notes: Pirates sign LaRoche to one-year deal

Adam LaRoche has agreed to a one-year contract worth $5 million with the Pirates, a deal that keeps the two sides out of salary arbitration. It was reported last week that the team was discussing a multi-year contract with the first baseman, and they will likely continue to negotiate that possibility. LaRoche, 28, hit .272/.345/.458 with 42 doubles, 21 home runs and 62 walks in his first season with the Bucs. He would have one more arbitration-eligible season in 2009 before becoming a free agent, assuming no long-term agreement is made.
