The Catcher Situation

There is a lot of buzz on the Piratenet over the weekend about how much work Ryan Doumit is putting in behind the plate. Juxtapose that with how it seems that the Bucs are trying to hide the work of Ronny P and you have the makings of a grand conspiracy. As loathe as I am to believe in conspiracies (I still believe the Warren Comission), I think that there maybe something to the whole notion that the Pirates actually want to have Doumet start behind the plate this year.
The main “evidence” is this. There have been reports that Doumit has been doing a lot of work blocking balls in the dirt but Ronny has not been a part of these drills. As we know from last season, Ronny was a passed ball machine and he therefore should be a part of this drill. Add to that the fact that there have been some embarrassing moments for Paulino during the “pop behind home plate” drill, and you can start adding two and two and come to an easy conclusion.  The PBC want Ryan behind the plate (mostly for his LH power I would presume) that they are giving him every chance this spring to take the job away from Paulino.
If this is indeed the truth, I think that it is a win-win situation for the Pirates because if Doumit does indeed win the job out right then they have a good back up in Paulino in case Ryan can’t do the job once the season starts. If Paulio wins the job, then the Bucs have a player that they have confidence in who can take over in the long run if and when Ronny his a slump or doesn’t do the job defensively.
It will be interesting to see how this breaks down during the spring training games once they start next week.

Was the “Warren Morris Commission” the commission that tried to tie Lee Harvey Oswald to Chico Lind’s missing pants?

  2. Aaron Benedict Says:

Ha! Yes, but they ignored the whole pants on a grassy knoll thing…

  3. Randy Linville Says:

Is the movie “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” about some Chico Lind groupies?

  4. sludgeworm Says:

“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” is that a movie about Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign? But I thought Hillary was a Spanky LaValliere groupie…
