The Pirates scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Blue Jays today, 8-7. Andrew McCutchen clinched the victory with a two-run single, and the team improved to 2-6 in Grapefruit League play.
Tom Gorzelanny made his second start of the spring, and was sharp early. However, after a 1-2-3 first inning, things fell apart. A double, two walks, a sacrifice fly, an infield single and a hit batsman later, and Gorzelanny was gone. Jesse Chavez entered the game and allowed a grand slam on his first offering. Overall, Gorzo was charged with five runs on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.
Zach Duke recovered well from an unstable start to the spring. He pitched three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out two. A few more outings like this would give Duke a great confidence boost heading into the season.
Steve Pearce continued making his case to head north with the Pirates, hitting a two-run home run in the first inning. He is now hitting .333 with a team-leading three home runs.
