The Pirates defeated the Reds 13-8 yesterday afternoon in Sarasota. Freddy Sanchez was 3 for 5 with two RBIís and is now hitting .391 on the spring. Jack Wilson was 2 for 3 with two RBIís, raising his spring average to .400. Adam LaRoche was 2 for 4, leaving him at .417.
The Bucs fell behind early, as Brandon Phillips connected for a three-run homer in the first off John Van Benschoten. Van Benschoten went three innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two and walking three. However, the team stormed back from the 4-0 deficit with a seven-run outburst in the fourth. Jason Bay had a run-scoring double in the inning, and Neil Walker plated two more with a double of his own. The Reds battled back to tie the game at seven, but the Pirates took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth.
Last nightís inaugural night game at McKechnie Field was canceled due to rain. The much-anticipated game will not be made up, making their matchup with the Yankees on March 19 the first to be played under the lights. That game will be broadcast on FSN Pittsburgh and MLB.TV.
Today, the Pirates will take on the Twins at 1:05 at McKechnie Field. Matt Morris will start, with Paul Maholm following him. Maholm had been scheduled to start last nightís game before it was rained out. The game will be broadcast by the Pirates Radio Network.
