The Pirates rallied for four ninth-inning runs to tie, but Freddy Guzmanís three-run home run gave the Tigers the 9-7 victory in ten innings. Kevin Thompson brought home two with a double during the ninth-inning comeback and Raul Chavezís solo home run in the tenth gave the Pirates the lead. However, Casey Fossum gave up Guzmanís homer to take the loss.
The Bucs fell behind 5-0 after four, as the Tigers got to Phil Dumatrait early. Nyjer Morgan, Andrew McCutchen, Doug Mientkiewicz and Chavez each tallied two hits on the day. Steve Pearce went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts, dropping his spring average to .241.
Tomorrow, the Phillies will visit Bradenton to face the Pirates. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM, with Ian Snell facing J.D. Durbin. Byung-Hyun Kim should also make his first appearance of the spring.
This game will be broadcast on MLB.TV, making it the first opportunity for most of us to see the 2008 Pittsburgh Pirates in action.
