I heard a few things on the radio broadcast of Saturday’s Pirate game that I thought were interesting:
- Greg Brown stated that Doug Mientkiewicz is almost certain to make the Pirates’ 25-man roster. We have heard all spring that he was a long shot to make the team, needing to first prove his defensive versatility. It is possible that Brown is totally off base. It is also possible that he knows more than I do. Apparently, Pirates’ management is valuing Mientkiewicz’s veteran leadership enough to give him a roster spot. Maybe this is an indication that Xavier Nady will be dealt. Maybe not. But keep it in mind if you are trying to predict which players will head north with the team.
- Does anyone else remember the team ever advertising its luxury suites on the radio? This seems new to me. Is it an indication that the team is struggling to sell them, and is trying to unload the suites on individual buyers? I would think that, even if ticket sales are down, the suites would still be bought up quickly by corporations. Maybe I am simply reading too much into it.
