As I have mentioned before, I am not a big believer of the stats that you see in spring training. But, with half of the spring games gone I’m starting to get a little worried about how this offense is shaping up, or should I say not shaping up.
After reading the reviews of the games that Matt puts up and from other sources, it seems that the main theme has been that we’re generally getting good pitching but our bats are falling silent. Traditionally, the first half of spring training is when the pitchers are not throwing a lot of breaking balls and are just getting their arms in shape. If this is how our offense is doing now, how badly are they going to do when pitchers are throwing their full complement of pitches?
This isn’t to say that there have been some bright spots to point out:
- Steve Pearce has been doing really well and should be on the big club when the Pirates go north in 15 days.
- Freddy also seems to be swinging a pretty hot bat as well although he hasn’t played the field yet.
- Nate McClouth also seems to be pulling away in his battle with Nyjer Morgan to be the starting Center Fielder.
We’ll have to keep a close eye on these final two weeks and see if the offense kick it up a notch or remains status quo.
