As expected, the Pirates sent ten players to minor league camp today, and right fielder Steve Pearce was among them. Pirate management has maintained all offseason that Pearce would start at Triple-A to accumulate at-bats, but many fans were holding out hope that he would make the team as the starting right fielder. I still have a feeling that Huntington is looking to deal Xavier Nady either late in the spring or early in the regular season, opening a spot for Pearce. This move may be a continued effort to keep Nadyís value high.
Other players cut today were pitchers Bryan Bullington, Ty Taubenheim, T.J. Beam, Brian Rogers and Marino Salas, infielders Neil Walker, Brian Bixler and Luis Cruz and centerfielder Andrew McCutchen. None of these moves is a huge surprise, although Beam was a long shot to find a spot in the bullpen. This wave of cuts leaves 40 players remaining in Major League camp.
