Friendly Confines | 2:20 | Dumatrait vs. Jason Marquis | Box
Well, it is back down to two games under.
Jason Marquis was tough and Phil Dumatrait was undone by BBs. He walked seven in less than five innings of work.
The Pirates wasted a homer and three RBI from Adam LaRoche.
For some reason in a one run game with two gone in the 9th, Brian Bixler was allowed to hit for himself against Kerry Wood. Not that there is a whole bunch of talent on the bench, but that was a little mor than wishful thinking. Bixler whiffed looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
For the past couple of days, the Pirates have been teasing us by dancing one game under .500 only to lose the following contest. Today could be the day.
Jason Marquis has been hit pretty hard in his last three starts. In sixteen innings of work, he has allowed 14 earned runs. He was the loser in each of those three contests and his record for 2008 stands at 1-3. That lone win was April 19th against the Pirates. He struck out a season high seven and gave up just one run in six innings to earn that W.
Marquis has made 19 career appearances against the Pirates. 15 of those were starts. He is 6-5 with a 4.04 ERA overall. All of his decisions have come in starting efforts.
Marquis is another pitcher against whom Jason Bay has enjoyed abundant success. The Bucs LF is 14-37 with four doubles, four homers and nine RBI. Overall, the team is hitting just .252 against Marquis. Freddy Sanchez (4-25), Adam LaRoche (3-21) and Xavier Nady (3-16) have struggled against him.
Phil Dumatrait will go for his second career win. He has pitched against the Cubs on four occasions in 2008 and and was hit hard on April 9th, earning the L in extra innings. Including a start when he was with the Reds in 2007, Dumatrait has a 7.36 ERA in 11 IP vs. Chicago.
The Cubs are only 9-37 against Dumatrait. Aramis Ramirez is 3-5 with a jack.
