Game #54: Wellemeyer Whips Pirates

Busch Stadium | 8:15 | Duke vs. Todd Wellemeyer | Box
Todd Wellemeyer was very impressive again tonight. He went seven innings and allowed just one run – a solo homer to Nate McLouth in the first inning. His bullpen nearly lost it. Jason Michaels drove home three with a bases clearing double with two gone in the 9th. But Ryan Franklin got McLouth to ground out to end it.
If the Pirates can get an effort like this out of Zach Duke with regularity, there will be little cause for complaint. He gave up a two run homer to Albert Pujols in the first and an unearned run (after an error of his own) in the second inning. Duke went six innings and gave up five hits and a walk.
If Howard Cosell was still alive, he’d refer to Michaels as a “gamer.”

Pre-Game Thoughts
Onto to Busch for a wrap around series. If the Pirates sweep, they will be over .500. Dream on.
Tonight’s match up pits Zach Duke and Todd Wellemeyer. With a win tonight, Duke can equal his 2007 win total. This will be his first start of 2008 against the Redbirds. His last appearance against St. Louis was his final start of 2007 when he gave up one run in seven inning. That start was also against Wellemeyer.
Duke overall is 2-2 with a 3.98 ERA against St. Louis in seven career starts. He is 0-2 with a 5.60 ERA at the current version of Busch Stadium. The Cardinals are hitting .338 against him. The person with the worst BA is Yadier Molina and he is 3-11 of Duke. No Card – not even Albert Pujols – has homered off of Duke.
Todd Wellemeyer continues to be impressive as a starter. As a reliever in 124 career games, Wellemeyer had a paltry 5.33 ERA. Since coming to St. Louis and becoming a starter, Wellemeyer has gone 8-3 in 22 starts with an ERA of 3.48. He is 5-1 this season. That includes a win back on May 14th.
Wellemeyer has made 14 career appearances in Pittsburgh. Three of those were starts. Overall he is 2-1 with an ERA of 3.41 in 31-2/3 innings of labor. The Pirates are hitting less than .200 against Wellemeyer (15-80) with only two extra base hits. One of those is a homer from Jason Bay.
