Game #57: Michaels’ Blast Puts Bucs Back In It

Busch Stadium | 8:15 | Gorzelanny vs. Adam Wainwright | Box
The Pirates fell behind early. However, Jason Michaels blasted a two out pinch hit grand slam in the seventh off of Adam Wainwright to put the Pirates back in the game. Jason Bay delivered a two out single in the next frame for the game winner.
Tom Gorzelanny gave up RBI occurrences to Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick in the first and again in the third to make it 4-0. Wainwright was crusing. He had allowed just one hit and had faced the minimum through five innings. He began to tire in the sixth when he allowed two hits. He escaped that without damage, but wasn’t as fortunate in the seventh when Bay doubled and walks were issued to Xavier Nady and Jose Bautista to set the stage for Michaels.
The Cardinals put two on with two gone in the 8th. Damaso Marte relieved Franquelis Osoria and retired Skip Schumaker to end the threat. A perfect ninth was pitched by Matt Capps.
It was Michaels’ third career granny and first since 5/28/06 off of Bobby Seay.
Pre-Game Thoughts
The Pirates desperately need a starter (or two or three) to get on a roll and pitch well for four or five straight starts. Tonight it is Tom Gorzelanny concluding the rap around series.
Gorzo’s last time out against the Birds was filled with free passes. That was 4/24/08 and he was the loser after giving up seven walks in five innings of toil.
Gorzelanny is 1-3 with a 3.41 ERA in five starts against St. Louis. Aaron Miles is 6-11 and Rick Ankiel is 3-3 with a homer. The Cards overall are 16-55 against the Bucs starter.
Adam Wainwright has been nothing short of a stud this season. He is 5-2 with an ERA+ of 146. His last outing against the Pirates was his 14th and final win of 2007 back on 9/29/07.
Wainwright is 3-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Pirates. He has made nine appearances against the Pirates, five of them being starts. He is unbeaten in six starts at Busch in 2008. The Pirates have clubbed Wainwright to the tune of a .343 average (35-102). Xavier Nady (6-13) and Jack Wilson (7-17) have done the most damage.
