PNC Park | 7:05 | Maholm vs. Mike Mussina | Box
This one was called in the third due to rain. The Yanks were winning 3-1 thanks to five extra base hits off of Paul Maholm. This one will go down on July 10 at 7:05 PM.
Is Mike Mussina a Hall of Famer? He has made a pretty good case so far – 260 wins, over 2,700 strikeouts. I think he has a little more work to do to differentiate himself from Jim Kaat, Bert Blyleven and Tommy John. The quest continues tonight. He has already reached 10 wins, just one shy of his eleven wins last year, which represented a career low for a full season. He got off to a rough start in 2008, but has been 9-2 since mid-April.
His lone start against the Pirates was a complete game shutout in June 2005. In 80 career at bats collectively, Pirate hitters have driven in just one run. The Pirates team has 16 hits against Moose. Chris Gomez (8-32) and Doug Mientkiewicz (4-18) have accounted for most of them.
Paul Maholm hasn’t lost since May 20th, but hasn’t been particularly dominant in winning his last three decisions. He is 5-5 overall in 2008 with an ERA that is worse than league average.
His only career appearance came last year on June 9. The Pirates booted a few en route to getting beat by Roger Clemens and the Yanks. The Yankees as a gang are 7-25 off of Maholm. Only Bobby Abreu (3-9) has more than one hit.
