Game #87: Duke Shelled, Brewers Sweep

Miller Park | 2:05 | Duke vs. Jeff Suppan | Box
I can’t imagine the pitching can get much worse. The Brewers jumped on Zach Duke early for four runs. After the Pirates offense showed some life and scored six runs, Duke couldn’t hold the lead. Denny Bautista was also clobbered in relief and actually took the loss after giving up four runs in the fourth inning.
Duke went 2-1/3 and gave up four earned runs. Bautista pitched one inning and gave up four earned runs. It looked okay early on because Jeff Suppan was also hit hard early. He lasted three innings and gave up six runs. Both Jason Bay and Adam LaRoche hit homers. Nate McLouth poked a three run double.
The Brewers offense was overwhelming. J.J. Hardy blasted two homers and added a double. The Beer Makers combined for nine doubles and three homers among their sixteen knocks. Hardy drove in four and Bill Hall drove in five. A guy sitting on a stool at the corner bar was summoned to pinch hit in the 9th and he also hit a double.
Mitch Stetter got the win in relief.

Pre-Game Thoughts
Look up “innings eater” in the dictionary and you’ll see pictures of Jeff Suppan and Livan Hernandez. Suppan has rarely been stellar, but he’s rarely been mediocre. And he seemingly never gets hurt. Barring something unforeseen, this will be his 10th straight season with at least 180 IP.
He is thoroughly average again this year. He is 5-6 with an ERA that is right at league average. Suppan split four decisions in June and has yet to face Pittsburgh in 2008. Against his former team, he is 10-3 with a 3.95 ERA. Suppan was 3-0 against Pittsburgh in 2007. The last time he face them was 9/2/07.
The Pirates are hitting .267 against Suppan. Nate McLouth is 5-10 with two dingers. Jason Bay is a meager 4-31. One of Bay’s hits was a homer.
Over his last seventeen innings, Zach Duke has given up just four earned runs. Despite that, he is 0-1 in those three starts. This will be his first appearance against Milwaukee in 2008. Duke is 3-3 with a 4.36 ERA against the Brewers in nine career starts.
Duke’s most recent start against the Beer Men was May 5, 2007. That day he was beaten by none other than Suppan.
The Brewers have feasted on Duke. They are hitting .354 against him. J.J. Hardy is 8-13 with a pair of homers. Bill Hall is 7-24 with three dingers.
