PNC Park | 7:05 | Maholm vs. Mike Mussina | Box
Paul Maholm pitched eight strong innings and Nate McLouth’s two run dinger in the 7th broke a 2-2 tie. Bucs win!
Maholm gave up just seven singles and walked one. He held the Yanks scoreless until two were out in the seventh. After that he went single-single-HBP-single and the Yanks tied it at two.
The Bucs first two runs were driven home by Freddy Sanchez – RBI single and sac fly. This was just Freddy’s second multi-RBI game since May.
McLouth’s homer came off of Jose Veras. Damaso Marte pitched the 9th for the save.
Rain out make up time. And in a strange coincidence, the men who started the rained out contest on June 26, will start the make up.
Mike Mussina’s lone start against the Pirates (that wasn’t rained out) was a complete game shutout in June 2005. In 80 career at bats collectively, Pirate hitters have driven in just one run. The Pirates team has 16 hits against Moose. Chris Gomez (8-32) and Doug Mientkiewicz (4-18) have accounted for most of them.
Over his last seven starts, Paul Maholm has allowed more than three tallies just once. Over that stretch, his ERA has fallen by one run so that it stands at just better than league average.
His only career appearance against the Bombers came last year on June 9. The Pirates booted a few en route to getting beat by Roger Clemens and the Yanks. The Yankees as a gang are 7-25 off of Maholm. Only Bobby Abreu (3-9) has more than one hit. The Yanks had cranked out five XBH in three innings against Maholm in the weather cancelled game.
