Game #109: Karstens, Defense Beat Back Hot Cubbies

Friendly Confines | 2:20 | Karstens vs. Jason Marquis | Box
Wow! Nice start from Jeff Karstens. He went six innings and allowed five harmless singles. The bullpen cleaned up with hitless relief, with John Grabow notching his first save of 2008.
The defense turned four double plays, the last of which ended the 8th inning.
Jason Michaels homered and drove in two. Jack Wilson had three hits and drove in the other run.

Pre-Game Thoughts
In the aftermath of the Jason Bay trade, the Pirates made a flurry of roster moves. DFA’d are Chris Duffy and Franquelis Osoria. Sent back down is Brian Bixler.
With the end of the Bay era comes the beginning of the Jeff Karstens era. Early last year, as you may recall, Karstens leg was broken when he was hit by a batted ball from Julio Lugo. After that he appeared in just 15 games (between the Majors and minors combined) in 2007. He has tossed 12 minor league games in 2008 (this will be his 2008 ML debut) and is 6-4 with a 3.80 ERA.
Karstens has not faced any of the Cubs in his career.
Jason Marquis has been mediocre in 2008 except against the Pirates. Overall he is 6-6 with a 4.69 ERA. But he is 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA against the Pirates in three starts in 2008. His last start was a no decision on May 24.
Marquis is 7-5 with a 4.03 ERA against the Pirates in 21 career appearances. 17 of those have been starts. The Pirates are hitting just .238 against Marquis. Freddy Sanchez, Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit all have homers.
