Game #111: New Guys Contribute, But It’s Not Enough

Friendly Confines | 2:20 | Snell vs. Carlos Zambrano | Box
The Pirates got homers from both Brandon Moss and Andy LaRoche. The blast from LaRoche tied the game at five each in the top of the 8th. However, Craig Hansen, making his Pirates debut, allowed a two out walk to Geovany Soto in the bottom of the 8th. He was pulled in favor of Sean Burnett. Pinch hitter Reed Johnson drilled a homer to give the lead back to Chicago and Alfonso Soriano follwed with another dinger to make it 8-5.
Ian Snell went four innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. The Cubs hit three homeres overall as Aramis Ramirez hit a solo tater earlier in the game off of T.J. Beam.
Ryan Doumit had his 13th multi-hit game since the start of July. Steve Pearce had his first multi-hit game of the season.

Pre-Game Thoughts
Jason Bay owns Carlos Zambrano. That fact is no longer relevant.
Z brings a 12-4 record and a 2.80 ERA into the game. He beat the Pirates back on May 23. He is 10-6 with a 3.93 ERA overall against Pittsburgh.
Minus Bay, the Pirates are hitting a ridiculous .201 against Zambrano. No one has a home run. Only Nate McLouth, who is 5-16, is the only player with more than two RBI.
Ian Snell looks for his second straight win. He is 4-8 with a 6.04 ERA in 2008. Snell lost to the Cubs on April 18. Snell is just 1-5 with a 5.62 ERA vs. the Wriglies all-time.
Alfonso Soriano has six hits in 12 ABs, including three homers, against Snell.
