Game #114: Karstens Tosses a Gem

Chase Field | 3:40 | Karstens vs. Randy Johnson | Box
If you saw this coming, raise your hand.
Jeff Karstens retired the first 23 Snake hitters and finished with a complete game, two hit shutout. It was the Pirates first complete game shutout since last August 12 when Tom Gorzelanny twirled one against the Giants. Karstens’ effort helped the Pirates to salvage one game in the series.
Karstens got two hits and scored a run in the 8th when he was doubled in by Doug Mientkiewicz. Earlier in the game Freddy Sanchez homered off of tough luck loser Randy Johnson. The Big Unit went 7-1/3 and gave up both Pirate runs.
The Diamondbacks drove several balls to the warning track, but they were always snagged by the Bucco OF. Chris Young’s two out 8th inning double busted up the perfecto.

Pre-Game Thoughts
I love these kind of match-ups: 293 career wins against four career wins.
If/when Doug Mientkiewicz gets to bat against Randy Johnson he should have “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” played as his pre-AB song. He can choose either a Frank Sinatra or Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons version. Johnson was rattled by Mientkiewicz in his last start and ended up the loser on June 9.
The Unit has won his last five decisions and has not given up an earned run in his last three starts. His career mark against the Pirates is 9-6 with a 2.43 ERA.
Chris Gomez is 12-40 against Johnson. He has a homer as do Jack Wilson and Jason Michaels.
Jeff Karstens will toe the rubber for the Bucs. He is 1-0 as a Pirate. He has yet to face Arizona or any of their players.
