PNC Park | 7:05 | Maholm vs. Josh Fogg | Box
Paul Maholm allowed two runs on seven hits over eight innings to get the win. The runs came on solo homers from Corey Patterson and Jay Bruce.
The Pirates went off on Josh Fogg in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Jason Micheals hit a two run homer and Ryan Doumit just missed a two out grand slam, but settled for a ground rule double when a fan in right field reach out and touched his high fly ball. Brandon Moss, who had doubled and scored on Michael’s tater, added a solo homer off of former Bucco Mike Lincoln in the 8th.
Maholm tossed 69 of his efficient 97 pitches for strikes. John Grabow finished for the save.
This will be Josh Fogg’s second ever start in PNC as a vistor. He was solid in his first tilt against the Pirates at PNC, giving up two runs over seven innings last year on July 17.
Overall Fogg is 1-1 with an 11.30 ERA against his former mates. He has not faced them this year. Look out for Nate McLouth. He is 5-9 with three homers off of Fogg. Raul Chavez is 4-5 with three doubles.
Paul Maholm probably deserves better than a 7-7 record. Despite allowing just two runs in two starts against the Reds in 2008, he has two no decisions. His last outing against Cincy was on June 30.
This will be his 13th start against the Reds – the most he has made against any team. He is 2-3 with a 4.28 in his first 12 starts. Edwin Encarnacion (12-27 with six RBI) and Brandon Phillips (10-26 with three homers and seven runs knocked in) have been big trouble for him in the past. The Reds overall are 30-94 against Maholm.
