PNC Park | 12:35 | Maholm vs. John Maine | Box
The Pirates staged a comeback late against the Mets battered bullpen. Steve Pearce played the hero with a RBI single that broke a 2-2 in the 8th inning. Jack Wilson stroked a two run double later to push the Pirates lead to three runs. In the sixth Adam LaRoche hit a two run homer to tie the score at two.
Mets starter John Maine tossed five scoreless innings. But he needed almost 100 pitches to do it. So, he was lifted in the sixth in favor of Brian Stokes who allowed LaRoche’s dinger. The 8th inning damage was allowed by Pedro Feliciano and Duaner Sanchez.
Paul Maholm tossed a solid seven innings. He gave up both Met runs on five hits and three walks. Sean Burnett needed three pitches to get the final out of the 8th inning and get the win. John Grabow picked up the save.
Did the Mets get the best of the Kris Benson trade? Not the one with the Bucs, but the one with the O’s? Yes. New York got this afternoon’s twirler John Maine and Jorge Julio for Benson. Julio didn’t do much and was traded for Orlando Hernandez who won 18 games for the Mets over the next two years. Maine has won 31 games for the Mets, including 10 in 2008. Benson hit double digits in wins with the Orioles in 2006 and hasn’t pitched in the show since.
Maine’s 2008 ERA is just better than league average. He has won two of his last three starts to move his record to 10-7 on the year. He has yet to face the Pirates in 2008. But he has a 2-2 record in four starts against the Smokey City Nine. His ERA in 22-2/3 IP against Pittsburgh is 3.57. The Pirates are 10-43 against Maine. Nate McLouth has the lone homer the team has clubbed against him. Jack Wilson is 3-10 and has the only other extra base hit – a double.
Paul Maholm has turned it on in the last couple of months. After his first 10 starts he was 2-5 with a 5.11 ERA. Since then he has made 14 starts, posted a 6-2 record and turned in an ERA of 2.81. He has not faced New York in 2008. His lifetime mark against the Mets is 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA in four starts.
The Mets are a punchless 12-46 against Maholm with just one extra base hit. Jose Reyes is 5-13.
