Busch Stadium | 8:15 | Davis vs. Todd Wellemeyer | Box
The Cardinals spotted Todd Wellemeyer to an early lead and he battled through five innings to pick up his third win of the year against the Pirates. The Cardinals scored eight runs in the first four innings against Jason Davis. The big blow was a two run homer from Rick Ankiel that gave the Cardinals a 5-2 lead after three innings. The score was tied headed into the home half of the third thanks to a two run homer from Ryan Doumit. But that was all the Bucs would get off of Wellemeyer and four St. Louis relievers.
The Pirates record is now 57-70. After 127 games in 2007 the club was 56-71.
After getting off to a 7-1 start, Todd Wellemeyer has scuffled a bit. He has won his last three outings to move his record to 10-4. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in a start since July 19.
He has beaten the Pirates twice in 2008, the last win coming on May 30. He is 5-3 against Pittsburgh with a 3.40 ERA. He has made 19 appearances, the last five of which have been starts.
The remaining Buccos of 2008 are hitting less than .200 against Wellemeyer collectively. Adam LaRoche (4-18) and Nate McLouth (2-13) have both homered.
So far, so good for Jason Davis as a starter in 2008. He is 0-1 in his two starts. But he has allowed just two earned runs in 13 innings.
He has never faced the Cardinals. But in matchups amongst other teams, Card hitters are 8-24 against Davis overall. Adam Kennedy is 4-10 with three walks.
