PNC Park | 7:05 | Gorzelanny vs. Dave Bush | Box
Ryan Braun clocked a three run dinger in the first inning and Dave Bush made it hold up as he allowed just a solo homer to Nate McLouth over 6-2/3. Tom Gorzelanny deserved better. He went seven and allowed just two hits after the first inning. He whiffed two and struck out four.
The Pirates aren’t playing favorites. They let everyone beat them.
In his last four starts, Dave Bush is 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA. His last outing was a W against the Pirates on August 22. That win even his 2008 mark against the Pirates at 1-1 in three starts. He has compiled a 4.50 ERA over 20 innings thus far in 2008 against Pittsburgh.
He is 2-4 with a 5.04 ERA in his career against the Pirates in eight starts and one stint of relief. He is 0-2 with a 6.43 in four career starts at PNC. Freddy Sanchez is 8-22 with 5 RBI against Bush. Adam LaRoche is 5-12 with three doubles. The team as a whole is hitting .241 with no home runs off of Bush.
It would be great if Tom Gorzelanny could finish the year on a good note. After Oliver Perez emerged strongly in 2004, he had a disastrous 2005 season. Gorzy is doing the same thing. But his season after break out is actually worse than Perez’ was.
This will Gorzelanny’s third straight start against Milwaukee. His last turn on August 23 was a not-so-triumphant start against the Brewers. On the year he is 1-2 with a 9.42 ERA against Milwaukee.
He is 3-2 with a 5.01 career ERA against the Beer Men in eight starts and one relief appearance. The Brewer hitters are a collective 44-142 off of Gorzy. Ryan Braun is 7-14 with two homers. J.J. Hardy is 8-19.
