PNC Park | 7:05 | Snell vs. Adam Wainwright | Box
The Pirates scored four runs in the fifth inning to tie the score and then the Pirates and Cardinals combined for just four hits from then until the end of the game in 12 innings.
Neither Ian Snell (yep, I missed the correct starter for the second straight game) nor Adam Wainwright were effective. Each pitcher gave up six runs in four innings.
In the 12th Chris Perez walked Adam LaRoche and surrendered a game winning double to Brandon Moss with two out. Craig Hansen got his first win with a scoreless inning of work.
Ryan Doumit drove in three runs. Nyjer Morgan had three hits and scored three times.
One more win and this team can’t lose 100!
Adam Wainwright looks for win #10 against just three losses. His ERA is a very nice 2.85 so far. The Pirates handed Wainwright one of his losses back on June 2. He is 3-2 in ten career appearances against Pittsburgh (six starts). His ERA is 4.70 in 44 innings of toil.
The Pirates are hitting .290 against him with a slugging average of less than .400. Freddy Sanchez is 5-13. Adam LaRoche is 2-13 with one of those hits being a dinger.
Jeff Karstens has dropped his last five decisions over his last five starts after winning his first two Pirate starts. He has never faced St. Louis. Troy Glaus is 1-8 and Adam Kennedy is 1-3. Other than those two, no Cardinals have faced Karstens.
