Game #149: LaRoche, McLouth Give Bucs the Sweep

PNC Park | 1:35 | Davis vs. Brad Thompson | Box
As Matt pointed out in the comments, I was wrong again. According to the post-game write up, Jeff Karstens missed his turn with an abcessed tooth. Jason Davis filled in, but wasn’t around long enough for the decision. Davis allowed one run in three innings and gave way to T.J. Beam who picked up the win. Five Pirate pitchers combined to limit the Cards to just eight hits and three runs.
The Pirates jumped on Brad Thompson with six runs in the first two innings. He lasted 3-2/3. Nate McLouth homered for the second straight day, scored three times and knocked in a pair. Adam LaRoche drove in three runs.
The Pirates can’t lose 100 games this year.
Ronny Paulino made his third appearance since being recalled and was 0-1.

Pre-Game Thoughts
I think I actually have both starters correct today…
Brad Thompson started the season in the Cardinals rotation. When Joel Pineiro was ready, Thompson was pushed into the bullpen and this will be just his third start since April. He is 5-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 54-2/3 IP so far in 2008. He has yet to face Pittsburgh in 2008. He has made 10 relief appearances against Pittsbugh in his career. In 15 career IP, his ERA is 3.60 and his record is 2-1.
Ryan Doumit (2-2) and Nate McLouth (2-3) are doing well in limited exposure to Thompson.
Jeff Karstens has dropped his last five decisions over his last five starts after winning his first two Pirate starts. He has never faced St. Louis. Troy Glaus is 1-8 and Adam Kennedy is 1-3. Other than those two, no Cardinals have faced Karstens.

Sorry Randy, they got you again. Looks like Jason Davis is making a spot start today.
